May 31, 1996) was an American psychologist and writer, known for his advocacy of psychedelic drugs. During a time when drugs like LSD and psilocybin were legal, Leary conducted experiments at Harvard University under the Harvard Psilocybin Project, resulting in the Concord Prison Experiment and the Marsh Chapel Experiment. Both studies produced useful data, but Leary and his associate Richard Alpert were fired from the university. Leary believed LSD showed therapeutic potential for use in psychiatry. He popularized catchphrases that promoted his philosophy, such as "turn on, tune in, drop out", "set and setting", and "think for yourself and question authority". He also wrote and spoke frequently about transhumanist concepts involving space migration, intelligence increase and life extension (SMIČLE), and he developed the eight-circuit model of consciousness in his book Exo-Psychology (1977). During the 1960s and 1970s, Leary was arrested regularly and was held captive in 29 different prisons throughout the world. President Richard Nixon once described Leary as "the most dangerous man in America".

New

1935150340 Third Revised Edition"When he put the gun to my head at 16, I left home.."So begins Christopher Hyatt's "Prologue" to this remarkable book.Rebels & Devils brings together some of the most talented, controversial and rebellious people of our time. Many, such as Timothy Leary, William S. Burroughs, Robert Anton Wilson, Osho and Aleister Crowley, are world-famous. Other contributors, such as S. Jason Black, Joseph Matheny and Peter J. Carroll, though highly accomplished in their own fields, are not as well-known. Still others are lesser-known -- for now. But, every contributor, in every article, in every aspect of their lives, has had but one focus: to bring freedom to their world. In all of human history, the essence of the independent mind has been the need to think and act according to standards from within, not without: To follow one's own path, not that of the crowd. Inevitably, it follows that anyone with an independent mind must become "one who resists or opposes an authority or established convention": a rebel.Usually rebellion is done so quietly that no one notices. But, when others -- especially others with power -- recognize an individual's 'disobe dience,' the rebel becomes the REBEL. And, if enough people come to agree with -- and follow -- the REBEL, there becomes a DEVIL.Until, of course, still more people agree. And then, finally, there is .. GREATNESS.

Religion, mystical visionary possession states are powerful and wonderful-they open the doors of perception, polish our sensory lenses, and shake up the autonomic nervous system. They're intimate and precious and they shouldn't be imposed on others. After he was forced out of academia, Leary became associated with many of the great names of the time including Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and Charles Mingus. In the mid-1960s his fame grew to international proportions. He was targeted as "the most dangerous man in the world" by the U.S. government and given a 10-year sentence for possession of two marijuana cigarettes. After he was released from prison, he continued to advocate brain-change through various means including computer software. Audience: General/trade. TIMOTHY LEARY thought of himself as a "philosopher-psychologist". As such he promoted provocative notions such as the government setting up centers to train young people in the safe use of LSD. It made perfect sense to Leary that he should be Governor of California. His campaign platform was hilarious and way too enlightened. He proposed that people pay Frivolity Fees a kind of sin tax for breaking the law instead of going to jail. When Leary? s campaign became an actual threat to the establishment candidates there was a real chance that he would win "they" stopped that by putting Leary in jail to prevent him from running. He learned of Reagan? s election from Algeria where he had fled after escaping from prison. Leary claimed that prison is the occupational hazard of a successful philosopher. He must have been quite successful because he was incarcerated in some 24 prisons through out the world. This is the story of Leary? s appearance before a Senate Committee and Teddy Kennedy? s interrogation, his persecution for his "dangerous" idea, his Queen of Heart-like escape trial, his prison experiences and his much condemned discussions with the FBI about the Weathermen Underground. Included are Sasha Shulgin? s recollections of Leary and the turn-on of the month era, a fascinating description of the Millbrook raid and finding G. Gordon Liddy in her bedroom by Rosemary Leary, and a wonderfully expressed discourse on cognitive liberty by Richard Glen Boire, author of Marijuana Law. Everyone who loves freedom and fears Big Brother, misses the sixties and enjoys Timothy Leary will have fun with this book.
