Audience: General/trade. Tom Cronin was the most recent president of Whitman College in Walla Walla and is a noted political scientist and educator. In 2005, he returned to Colorado College to teach and to write. An authority on the expanding power of the American Presidency in the 20th Century, he was well-known at Whitman College for his ability to remember the names of the majority of students and for bringing cookies to students studying in the college library. We have a sizable chunk of his personal library if anyone is interested in other books from his collection or books signed to him by the authors. David Deal, 62, Whitman College professor, friend, and colleague, died October 15 at his home in Walla Walla. He had been undergoing treatment for cancer. David was a remarkable colleague and a great and wise mentor to everyone who studied with him, worked with him, or knew him, said President Tom Cronin. Few people contributed more to the strengthening of Whitman College in recent decades than did Dave Deal. Deal joined the Whitman faculty in 1969. A Wenatchee native, he earned a bachelor s degree at Whitworth College in Spokane and his Ph.D. in history at the University of Washington. He also attended Allahabad University in India and received a certificate from the Tokyo School of Japanese Language. He was a visiting scholar at Stanford University and a research associate at Harvard University. Deal, who specialized in modern Chinese history, was instrumental in establishing the Whitman in China Exchange program, which he oversaw for nearly 20 years, and he founded the Asian studies major at Whitman. He served the College in many ways including as a division chair and chair of the faculty. He was dean of the faculty from 1989 to 1996. He wrote and lectured extensively, publishing more than 20 articles. Two books are pending

After nine months in Greenwich Village ( 43-44), he married Jeanne Abbot and began writing for Liberty, Colliers, and Esquire along with The Saturday Evening Post. It was shortly after the success of Bend of the River that Jeanne and Bill moved to Walla Walla, WA, where Bill still lives, though Jeanne passed on in 2001. Light to moderate shelf wear to covers/corners; satisfaction guaranteed. Three Comrades (German: Drei Kameraden) is a novel first published in 1936 by the German author Erich Maria Remarque. It is written in first person by the main character Robert Lohkamp, whose somewhat disillusioned outlook on life is due to his horrifying experiences in the trenches of the First World War's French-German front. He shares these experiences with Otto Köster and Gottfried Lenz, his two comrades with whom he runs an auto-repair shop in late 1920s Hamburg (probably). Remarque wrote the novel in exile and it was first published in Dutch translation as Kammerater, with English translation following soon in Good Housekeeping from January to March 1937 and in the book form in the same year. First German language edition was published in 1938 by exile publisher Querido in Amsterdam, but the novel was published in Germany only in 1951.

274 Walking with the ComradesRoy, Arundhati Penguin Books 014312059X / 9780143120599 PAPERBACK

New

014312059X From the award-winning author of The God of Small Things comes a searing frontline exposé of brutal repression in India. In her latest book, internationally renowned author Arundhati Roy draws on her unprecedented access to a little-known rebel movement in India to pen a work full of earth-shattering revelations. Deep in the forests, under the pretense of battling Maoist guerillas, the Indian government is waging a vicious total war against its own citizens-a war undocumented by a weak domestic press and fostered by corporations eager to exploit the rare minerals buried in tribal lands. Roy takes readers to the unseen front lines of this ongoing battle, chronicling her months spent living with the rebel guerillas in the forests. In documenting their local struggles, Roy addresses the much larger question of whether global capitalism will tolerate any societies existing outside of its colossal control.

Included in the collection are the works of John Newton Howitt, who is unquestionably the greatest modern artist of graphic terror. Each card in this 55-card collection, written by acknowledged pulp historian Robert Weinberg, tells a fascinating story about the images and their diabolical inspiration.
